Anchorage closed in high swell and strong winds

08 Oct 2022 / Port Kembla, Australia

Port Kembla anchorage was closed to shipping today (8 October) due to severe weather (high swell and strong force wind). It is expected to remain closed for several days as conditions are expected to deteriorate.

All vessels were instructed to drift off port at a safe distance 12NM off the coast and monitor VHF radio channels 11 and 16.

The port remains open to harbour movements, but some movements may face some disruption with pilotage, as follows:

  • Every vessel movement into and out of the port will be risk assessed and pilotage will be done on a case-by-case basis.
  • Due to wind and seas, it is likely there will be a reduced chance to move lighter vessels and vessels with large windage areas (PCCs, PCTCs, RORs, etc.)
  • Based on forecast conditions, pilotage looks likely to be suspended tomorrow (to be advised)

Vessels alongside the berth must follow the below instructions:-

  • Increase mooring lines in their current mooring arrangements. This is especially pertinent to vessels that will be affected by the westerly winds.
  • Lower the outboard anchor to the seabed at the earliest opportunity.
  • Keep a close watch on VHF Ch 11 and report any movement immediately to the VTS via VHF or by calling 02 4275 1097
  • If a vessel needs any assistance, must contact VTS immediately.
