Alert sounded as cyclone heads to Gujarat coast

The India Meteorological Department has informed that the powerful cyclone Biparjoy has weakened to a 'very severe cyclonic storm' from an 'extremely severe cyclonic storm.' The cyclone has been moving northwards at a speed of 5kmph and is centered approximately 290km southwest of Porbandar.

An Orange Alert has been issued for the Saurashtra and Kutch coasts in Gujarat as the cyclonic storm is set to cross the Jakhau Port in Gujarat by the evening of 15 June as very Severe Cyclonic Storm, with maximum sustained wind speed of 125-135kmph gusting to 150kmph.

Cyclone 'Biparjoy' has an extensive damaging potential, and it is likely to impact districts of Gujarat the most.

Sea condition will be phenomenal over northeast and adjoining eastcentral Arabian Sea till 15th evening and rough to very rough over adjoining northwest Arabian Sea and rest parts of eastcentral Arabian Sea.

Cyclone Biparjoy is on course to become the cyclone with the longest lifespan in the Arabian Sea.

Mundra, Vadinar, Sikka, Kandla, Okha, Bedi, Pipavav, Porbander & Navlakhi ports have suspended operations in view of the approaching Cyclone.

Warning Signal - Keep hoisted warning signal GD-10 at Jakhau, Mundra, Kandla, Navlakhi, Salaya & Okha and GD-9 at Porbandar. South Gujarat Ports viz MulDwarka, Veraval, Jafrabad, Pipavav, Bhavnagar, Alang, Dahej, Magdalla to maintain LCS-3.

At Mumbai, vessel movements remain normal, however cargo operation severely affected since 10 June till now due to continuous bad weather/strong wind/rolling/choppy sea.
