Alert sounded as cyclone heads for coast

12 Jun 2023 / Gujarat, India

Cyclone Biparjoy, which earlier seemed headed towards the Pakistan coastline, is now predicted to move slightly east towards the northern Gujarat coast and likely to make landfall between the Kutch district of Gujarat and Karachi in Pakistan around noon of 15 June, as very severe cyclone with wind speed reaching 125-135 kmph gusting to 150 kmph, the Indian Meteorological Department has warned.

Biparjoy has developed into an extremely severe cyclonic storm after having existed as a cyclone over the Arabian Sea for nearly 10 days, making it one of the longest lasting cyclones to impact India in recent times. Biparjoy is also the strongest cyclone in Arabian Sea after cyclone Tauktae.

By the time it makes the landfall, it will have lost some of its strength and downgraded to a “very severe cyclonic storm”. The cyclone is expected to remain at its maximum strength, generating wind speeds of 165-175kmph, with gusts reaching up to 195kmph. By the time it hits land, the associated wind speeds are likely to reduce to 125-135kmph, with gusts reaching up to 150kmph.

The intensity of rainfall would increase with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy falls at isolated places very likely over Kutch, Jamnagar and heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places over Porbandar, Rajkot, Morbi & Junagadh districts of Gujarat on 15 June.
