USD 60,000 plan to recycle and reuse waste water recognised
GAC Qatar’s plan to recycle and re-use waste water from container cleaning at its inland container depot has earned it the country prize in the Living Business programme organised by Globally, Get in the Ring and HSBC.
The programme aims to help businesses deliver significant enhancements to their environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives by embedding sustainable principles in their organisational framework.
It recognised GAC Qatar’s USD 60,000 project which will recover and reuse 85% (approximately 75,000 gallons) of the 90,000 gallons of water it uses to clean containers every month. The project will also add value to the business and its stakeholders as a sustainable business process which will generate cost savings.
GAC Qatar was among more than 120 companies across ten sectors from ten countries in the Middle East who participated in the programme – a growth of 200% this year. Participants were given one-on-one coaching with ESG experts to help them achieve their goals, and the companies presented their initiatives at the UK pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai to a panel of judges. The winners will attend a course at the Institute for Sustainability Leadership at The University of Cambridge.
Anthony Picardo, the company’s QHSSE Manager, made the winning presentation of GAC Qatar’s initiative to the judges. He says: “Sustainability is a global initiative, and GAC Qatar is committed to making the world better and cleaner in any way we can.”
Henrik Althen, General Manager of GAC Qatar, adds: “I’m glad to be part of the team that does not only feel committed to protect our natural environment, human and ecological health, but also driving innovation that will lead future generations to a better tomorrow.”
Next year, Living Business will expand beyond the Middle East to 15 countries across four continents. For more details about the programme, go to www.livingbusiness.com.
